Colorado
Music Festivals

The bluegrass weekends, the summer-long classical seasons, the jazz parties in box canyons and the amphitheater that started it all, with when each one usually happens.

What is the biggest music festival in Colorado?

The best-known is the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, a four-day June festival in Telluride's Town Park that marked its 53rd year in 2026. For sheer length, the Aspen Music Festival and School is larger: its 2026 summer season ran eight weeks, July 1 to August 23, with almost 200 public events.

Colorado's music calendar is unusual in one way: much of it happens at 8,000 feet or higher, in towns with a single main street and a ring of peaks behind the stage.

That changes the experience. Festival days start cold and end cold, even in July. Afternoon thunderstorms are a normal part of the program from midsummer on. And because the host towns are small, the planning problem is rarely the ticket. It is the bed, the parking and the drive.

This guide covers the recurring festivals and seasons that define the year, grouped by style. Dates given for 2026 are the most recent confirmed editions; future dates are announced by each organizer, usually in winter for summer events.

Bluegrass, folk and roots

The Planet Bluegrass Festivals

Two of the state's signature festivals are produced by the same Lyons-based company, Planet Bluegrass.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Held over four days in Telluride's Town Park, at the end of a box canyon at about 8,750 feet, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is the closest thing Colorado has to a music pilgrimage. The 2026 festival ran June 18 to 21, headlined by Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gregory Alan Isakov and Larkin Poe, with a free kickoff show in Mountain Village the night before and separately ticketed late-night NightGrass shows at venues around town.

What to know: tickets go on sale in December and have sold out quickly in recent years. Many attendees camp in festival campgrounds, and the overnight lows in a Telluride June can drop near freezing. Bring layers, a rain shell and sun protection, and expect to spend a lot of the weekend at 8,750 feet.

Rocky Mountain Folks Festival

Held at the Planet Bluegrass ranch along the St. Vrain River in Lyons, about an hour north of Denver, the Folks Festival is the smaller, more songwriter-focused sibling. The 36th edition ran August 7 to 9, 2026 with a lineup that included Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Ani DiFranco and Jesse Welles. Because Lyons sits at the base of the foothills rather than high in the mountains, it is an easier trip for visitors still adjusting to altitude.

Classical and dance

Summer-Long Classical Seasons In Aspen And Vail

Colorado's classical festivals are not weekend events. They are whole seasons, with something on most days for six to eight weeks.

Aspen Music Festival and School

Founded in 1949, the Aspen Music Festival and School brings hundreds of young musicians to Aspen each summer to study alongside professional faculty and guest artists. The 2026 season, titled "For All," ran July 1 to August 23 and closed with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Many orchestral concerts are held in the Benedict Music Tent, and the lawn outside is a long-standing local tradition for listening without a seat ticket. Program details are at aspenmusicfestival.com.

Bravo! Vail Music Festival

Bravo! Vail stages visiting orchestras in residence at the open-air Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Its 2026 season, the festival's 39th, ran June 25 to August 6 with more than 60 concerts across the Vail Valley, including residencies by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. See bravovail.org.

Vail Dance Festival

In late July and early August the same amphitheater hosts the Vail Dance Festival, which brings major ballet and contemporary companies to the valley. The 2026 festival ran July 31 to August 10.

Colorado Music Festival and the Front Range

Closer to Denver, the Colorado Music Festival performs summer orchestral concerts in the historic Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, a wooden hall built in 1898. For classical music without a mountain drive, it is the easiest option.

Jazz, jam and everything else

Jazz Weekends And The Red Rocks Season

Telluride Jazz Festival

The Telluride Jazz Festival brings a long weekend of jazz, funk and soul to Town Park in early August. In 2026 the core festival ran August 7 and 8, with an opening show in Mountain Village on August 6 and a jazz brunch to close on August 9 (telluridejazz.org).

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks is not a festival, but no Colorado music guide is complete without it. The city-owned amphitheater sits between two 300-foot sandstone monoliths in the foothills west of Denver and has hosted regular concert seasons almost every year since 1947. The season traditionally begins with the Easter Sunrise Service and runs into the fall, and summer brings the Film on the Rocks movie series. Outside of event hours the venue is open as a park, and the steps are a popular workout. Check the official schedule at redrocksonline.com.

Practical advice

Getting The Most Out Of A Mountain Music Festival

  • Sleep low if you can. The first night at altitude is the hardest. If your festival is in Telluride, Aspen or Breckenridge, consider spending the night before in a lower town on the way in.
  • Pack for three seasons in a day. Mountain festivals can swing from sunburn at noon to freezing at midnight. A warm hat matters as much as sunscreen.
  • Respect the lightning pauses. Outdoor stages stop for lightning within a set radius. Shelter in a vehicle or building, not under a tent or a tree.
  • Take the bus or gondola. Telluride's free gondola connects town and Mountain Village, and Aspen, Vail and Breckenridge all run free or low-cost town buses. Parking is limited at every one of them.
  • Hydrate more than feels necessary. Dry air and elevation dehydrate you faster than at sea level, and alcohol hits harder at altitude.
