What are the biggest annual events in Colorado?
The anchors of the Colorado calendar are the National Western Stock Show in Denver each January, Steamboat's Winter Carnival in February, the BOLDERBoulder 10K on Memorial Day, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in late June, the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo at the end of summer, the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend and the Great American Beer Festival in Denver each fall.
Colorado does not have one festival season. It has five or six, stacked by elevation and by snow, and the same weekend can mean a ski race at 11,000 feet and a peach harvest on the Western Slope.
This calendar lists the recurring events that people actually plan trips around, grouped by the month they usually fall in. For each one we give the typical timing and, where the organizer has published it, the most recent confirmed date. Treat the month as the reliable part. Exact dates shift every year with weekends, holidays and, for anything outdoors, the weather.
Two habits will save you trouble. First, confirm on the organizer's own site rather than a ticket reseller or an events aggregator, because aggregators often carry last year's dates. Second, book lodging early for the big mountain-town weekends. Telluride, Aspen and Breckenridge are small towns, and a single festival can fill every bed for an hour's drive in each direction.
January to March
Winter: Stock Shows, Snow Sculpture And Skijoring
January
The National Western Stock Show has opened Denver's year since 1906. It runs about two and a half weeks at the National Western Complex north of downtown, with professional rodeo, livestock judging, a horse show and a large trade fair. The 2027 edition is scheduled for January 9 to 24. See nationalwestern.com.
Late January brings the International Snow Sculpture Championships to Breckenridge, where invited teams carve huge blocks of packed snow over several days and the finished pieces stay on display for about a week. The 2027 event is listed for January 23 to February 2, with carving in the first half and viewing in the second, weather permitting (gobreck.com).
January 2027 also brings something new: the Sundance Film Festival moves to Boulder, with its first Colorado edition scheduled for January 21 to 31, 2027 across eleven theaters in the city.
February
Steamboat Winter Carnival is one of the oldest winter carnivals in the West, and it is the one where skiers are towed behind horses down Lincoln Avenue, the town's main street. The 2026 carnival ran February 3 to 8; the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club lists February 2 to 7, 2027 (sswsc.org).
February is also prime time for wintering bald eagles at Barr Lake State Park northeast of Denver, which has hosted an early-February eagle festival in past years.
March
March is festival month in the mountains because the snow is deep and the days are long. Frozen Dead Guy Days, the cryonics-themed festival that started in Nederland, now runs in Estes Park; the 2026 edition was March 27 to 29 (frozendeadguydays.com). Leadville Ski Joring takes over Harrison Avenue on the first full weekend of March, and the Monte Vista Crane Festival celebrates the spring migration of sandhill cranes through the San Luis Valley; its organizers list March 5 to 7, 2027.
April to June
Spring: Film, Footraces And The First Big Music Weekends
April and May
April is mud season in most mountain towns, and many lodges and restaurants close for a few weeks. The Front Range picks up the slack. The Boulder International Film Festival moved from March to April in 2026 and has announced April 8 to 11 for 2027. At Red Rocks, the concert season traditionally opens with the Easter Sunrise Service, a nondenominational service held at dawn on Easter Sunday.
Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest of the year. Mountainfilm fills Telluride with documentary screenings (its 2026 run was May 21 to 25), and the BOLDERBoulder 10K puts tens of thousands of runners and walkers on the streets of Boulder on Memorial Day itself.
June
June is when the high country opens and the festival calendar fills up. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival runs over four days in mid to late June in Town Park; 2026 was its 53rd year, June 18 to 21. The Food & Wine Classic in Aspen usually lands the same weekend. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb sends cars and motorcycles up the final miles of the Pikes Peak Highway toward the 14,115-foot summit on a Sunday in late June; organizers have set June 27, 2027 for the 105th running (ppihc.org).
Summer theater starts in June too. The Colorado Shakespeare Festival performs at the outdoor Mary Rippon Theatre on the University of Colorado Boulder campus from early June to early August.
July to September
Summer: Rodeos, Classical Seasons And Harvest Festivals
July
The Fourth of July week belongs to rodeo and art. The Greeley Stampede runs from late June through the Fourth, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver usually falls on the holiday weekend itself (July 3 to 5 in 2026). Mid-July brings the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs.
The classical music seasons run through July and into August: the Aspen Music Festival and School (July 1 to August 23 in 2026) and Bravo! Vail (June 25 to August 6 in 2026). Our music festivals guide covers both in detail.
August
August is the harvest month on the Western Slope. The Palisade Peach Festival ran August 21 and 22 in 2026, and the sweet corn harvest around Olathe follows. The Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in Lyons and the Telluride Jazz Festival both take early-August weekends. Endurance athletes head to Leadville for the Leadville Trail 100 races, run and mountain bike, at 10,152 feet. The Colorado State Fair opens in Pueblo in late August and runs through Labor Day.
September
Labor Day weekend is the Telluride Film Festival, which ran September 4 to 7 in 2026 and traditionally keeps its lineup secret until the eve of the festival. Mid-September is the Breckenridge Film Festival (September 17 to 20 in 2026), the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials (September 9 to 13 in 2026) and the Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade, held as a single-day event on September 19 in 2026. Above it all, the aspens start turning at the highest elevations, and the elk rut begins in Rocky Mountain National Park.
October to December
Fall And Early Winter: Beer, Film And Holiday Lights
October
The Great American Beer Festival is the biggest name on the Colorado autumn calendar, and in 2026 it moved outdoors to Levitt Pavilion in south Denver for October 10 and 11. Telluride's genre festival, the Telluride Horror Show, follows on October 16 to 18. Estes Park's Elk Fest celebrates the rut in early October (October 3 and 4 in 2026). The first ski lifts usually start turning at Keystone or Arapahoe Basin sometime in October, if the temperatures cooperate for snowmaking.
November
The Denver Film Festival spans late October and early November, and Denver Arts Week fills galleries across the city in early November. The Georgetown Bighorn Sheep Festival is traditionally the second Saturday of November. Most of the large ski resorts open between early November and Thanksgiving.
December
Holiday light shows open around Thanksgiving: Blossoms of Light at Denver Botanic Gardens and Zoo Lights at the Denver Zoo both ran from late November into early January last season. The 9NEWS Parade of Lights fills downtown Denver on the first weekend of December (December 5 in 2026), and Breckenridge's Ullr Fest salutes the Norse god of snow in mid-December (December 17 to 19 in 2026). Our winter festivals guide has the full season.
Planning around an event
How To Plan A Trip Around A Colorado Festival
The small-town festivals are the ones that require planning. Telluride has a few thousand year-round residents and one road in; Aspen and Breckenridge are not much bigger. A practical approach:
- Lodging first, tickets second. For Telluride Bluegrass or the Film Festival, lodging in Telluride and Mountain Village can be gone before the lineup is announced. Montrose, Ridgway and Ouray are the usual fallbacks.
- Watch the altitude. Many festivals sit between 8,000 and 10,000 feet. Drink more water than usual and take the first evening easy. Our altitude and mountain weather guide explains why.
- Plan for afternoon storms. From mid-July into early September, thunderstorms build over the mountains most afternoons. Outdoor festivals pause for lightning; bring a rain shell.
- Check road status in spring and fall. Independence Pass and Trail Ridge Road close for winter, and mountain highways can see snow in any month outside midsummer. COtrip.org has current closures; inside Colorado you can also dial 511.
- Leave no trace at outdoor venues. Most festivals run waste-sorting stations, and many are now reusable-cup events. Our Leave No Trace guide covers the rest.
